Lucius D. Clay Medal awarded to Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel

merkel_angelaThe German Chancellor, Dr. Angela Merkel will be honored with one of the most prestigious German-American awards in Berlin on Saturday, 10 October 2009. For her efforts and achievements in transatlantic relations, the Federation of German-American Clubs e.V. (FGAC) will award the General Lucius D. Clay Medal to Dr Merkel as part of the celebration of the German-American Friendship Day 2009.

The ceremony will take place on Saturday, October 10 to 3pm in the Press and Information Office of the Federal Government.

The Ambassador of the United States of America to the Federal Republic of Germany, Mr. Philip D. Murphy, will deliver the keynote address, states FGAC -President Annette Thor. As Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel cannot be present at the actual ceremony, the Lucius D. Clay Medal will be presented to her at a later date.

The medal has been awarded since 1980 and was named for General Lucius D. Clay (1897-1978), the co-initiator and organizer of the Berlin Airlift that provided food and supplies to the city's population during the Berlin Blockade. Clay was one of the founding fathers of the Federation of German American Clubs in 1948. The German-American Day 2009 in Berlin is organized by the FGAC.
