The German-American Women’s Club was founded in 1948, after the repeal of the post-war non-fraternization laws, as a forum for better understanding between German and American women. The members decided to address the enormous suffering of the population by offering practical help hrough various activities such as milk donations, baby showers, and the March of Dimes for polio victims (Pfennigparade). The idea of charity inspired by American involvement after the war is still alive and a major goal of our club. Our members organize two important annual fund-raising highlights to meet this goal. The Silver Tea gets the fall season off to a good start. Invited guests fill a large silver bowl with generous donations as they enjoy tea and sandwiches. During the Carnival (Fasching) season, our Club’s Magnolia Ball is famous for its elegance, festive program and attractive tombola. The most important aim of our club is to support the German-American student exchange, initiated 45 years ago by a Munich club president, and the youth program of the German-American Federation. Along with charity activities, the club cultivates friendship among women of all nations. In addition to the monthly meeting with coffee, cake and an interesting speaker, club-member volunteers offer (free of charge) a conversation group, art, concert and cooking groups, a bi-monthly lunch table, computer courses, walks, and the popular Dining Out with husbands invited. The club has approximately 230 members. | ||||||||
