Nürnberg - Fürth

Our club -- founded in 1949 by Mrs. Lund, wife of the region's then American High Commissioner -- celebrated its 55th anniversary on March 19, 2004. The early years after the war saw the establishing of relationships between German and American women. Today, we need not start again from scratch -- but it is and will always remain important to find ways of successfully shaping our common future in peace and freedom.

"It is encounters with people that makes life worth living."
(Guy de Maupassant)

Our members are involved in a variety of volunteer programs. In addition to two major club activities each month, we offer interest groups for literature, hiking, theater and concert visits, languages, dining out, needlework, cooking, and bridge as well as a club trip and other, smaller excursions.

Particular emphasis is laid on supporting and financing the college student exchange and youth programs, which are to help young people with sharpening their skills for crosscultural encounters and to experience and live the other culture, thus diminishing prejudice and clichés. Travelling alway means leaving behind the familiar and opening up for new experiences. Even though it is the students' and youngsters' curiosity for the new and different which is at the fore, by staying in a foreign country they also confront their own self from a different perspective. Reflecting upon one's own life is best possible when mirrored against a different environment.

That is why we, the club members, hope to not only facilitate the students' travel and exchange activities as such, but to enrich their life experience through life experience in self-determined ways.
